Core Technical Principles Flashcards
when did the industrial revolution begin?
1760
what is CAD?
computer aided design - using computers and software to design products
what is CAT?
computer aided testing - using computers and software to test the functionality of products before they are made.
What is CAM?
Computer Aided Manufacturing - using automated machines to manufacture products eg. computer numerical control (CNC) machines, laser cutters and 3D printers.
What is enterprise?
When an idea is turned into a business proposal which is viable as a commercial product
What is a patent?
A legal process which shows that you are the first person to register an idea or invention and that other people can’t copy it
What is a cooperative?
An enterprise which is owned by members who are a part of its workforce or customers.
What are LunaTik Multi-Touch Watch Kits?
A product made in 2010 by Scott Wilson to turn old ipod nanos into touch watches. He needed to raise $15,000 on kickstarter.com to start production, but he raised almost $1,000,000 in one month.
Give the appearance, 3 characteristics and 3 uses of PLA
appearance - smooth or textured finish, easily coloured
characteristics - non-toxic, easily moulded, biodegradable
uses - bottles, pots, disposable food and drink containers, pens, phone cases, 3D printer filament
Give the appearance, 3 characteristics and 3 uses of PHB
Appearance - smooth or textured finish
characteristics - stable, stiff, quite brittle, non-toxic, easily processed and moulded, limited chemical resistance, fully biodegradable
uses - bottles, pots, household items, disposable food containers
What is flexible MDF?
MDF which has had grooves cut, leaving about 2mm of surface MDF, making it flexible but still retain its surface finish.
What are the uses of flexible MDF?
Modern wave-shaped or curved furniture and interior walls
What metal is most commonly used for artificial joints or other orthopaedic applications or dental implants and why?
Titanium because it does not react with the human body, is very strong and light and has excellent corrosion resistance
What are optical fibres?
They are wires which carry a signal faster than copper wires and don’t suffer from electromagnetic interference like copper wires do by transmitting light along the class core.
Give 3 uses for fibre optics
passing information quickly over the internet, endoscopes (small cameras used to investigate areas inside the body without the need for invasive surgery), novelty lighting displays
