Core Technical Principles Flashcards
What is automation?
The use of automatic equipment in production.
What was the industrial revolution?
The process that transformed manufacturing from handmade to machine-made
What is artificial intelligence?
Use of computer systems to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence.
What is smart technology?
Technology that uses a chip to store information.
What is renewable energy?
Power that is generated using natural resources that will not run out
What is a modular building?
A building made of smaller, prebuilt parts put together.
What are some advantages of modular buildings?
- Can be erected quickly
- Low cost
- Improvements in stock control mean less storage space needed
What is interest?
A fee charged for borrowing money, or money earned from savings.
(calculated as a percentage)
Why is traditionally borrowing money from a bank for a buisness risky?
It can be expensive with interest payments
What is crowdfunding?
A large number of people who raise money for a project or venture
What does viable mean?
Something that will work successfully.
What is virtual marketing?
Virtual campaigns using social media to spread the work have become popular way to launch products.
What are cooperatives?
A buisness owned, governed and self managed by its workers
What is fair trade?
A movement that aims to achieve fair and better conditions and opportunities that promote sustainability for developing countries.
What is a sustainable resource?
A resource that can be replaced once used
Why are finite reasources popular?
- They are easily accessible due to strong supply chains
- They are cheap
What is ecological footprint?
An analytical measurement of the amount of global resources used
What is a non-finite resource?
A renewable energy that harnesses the Earth’s natural resources
Why are non-renewable resources beneficial?
They are found naturally and can be replaced
What are some examples of non-finite resources?
- Wood
- Cotton
- Renewable energy
Why are landfill sites harmful for the enviroment?
They can release harmful gases which can pollute the surrounding air and soil
What is continuous improvement?
A process of making small changes to improve the way a company works. (e.g. speed and quality)
What are the advanatges of automation?
- Increased efficiency and speed of production
- Accurate and consistent output
- Reduced labour costs and can work 24/7
- Ability to work in a variety of enviroments
What are disadvantages of automation?
- Replaces workforce leading to some job loses
- No human input/designs
- Upskilled workforce to maintain robots
- Expensive to set up
Give one disadvantage of crowd funding to a new company.
If it dosen’t reach it’s funding target, the money invested so far may have to be returned, affected the project as a whole and the reputation of the manufacturer.
What is global warming?
The increase in average global temperature which causing extreme weather events.
What is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?
An assessment company’s do to find out how much pollution is being created and plan a reduction stratergy.
What is Technology Pull?
A new product development is pushed by technology research
- e.g. radio has become more portable over the years
What is Market Pull?
The demand for a new product or solution for an existing problem with the product
- e.g. controllers have changed over the years to increase the distance between the console and player
What is culture?
The combination of the ideas, beliefs, customs and social behaviours of a society or group of people
What is a Flexible Manufacturing System?
A method of prodcution designed to easily adapt to changes in the quantity or type of product being manufactured.
What is Lean Manufacturing?
Manufacturing which focuses on minimising wastenand improving effciency, which is cost saving and reduces use of resources
Why do manufactures use JUST-IN-TIME?
To respond to customer demand by closely monitering stock so products can be reordered as needed.
