core practtical 6: chlorination of a tertiary alcohol Flashcards

1
Q

method

A
  • add tertiary alcohol to measuring cylinder, measure mass
  • put into separating funnel, weigh by difference
  • add concentrated HCl to separating funnel in small portions. after each portion, stopper flask and invert, open tap to release pressure
  • let separating funnel stand in fume cupboard, and wait for layers to separate
  • run tap to get rid of aqueous bottom layer
  • add sodium hudrogen carbonate to neutralise acid, release tap to relieve co2 pressure, continue until no more effervscene
  • repeat
  • add anhydrous sodium sulfate drying agent, keep adding until moves freely
  • ddecant into distillatino flask
  • distil

Q

method for getting cyclohezene from cyclohexanol

A
  • weigh by difference the cyclohexanol into distillation apparatus
  • add concentrated phosphoric acid
  • add anti bumping granules and distill anything below 100
  • pour distillate into separating funeel and add sodium chloride (separates organic from aqueous)
  • shake and leave to separate
  • run off into a beaker and transfer upper layer into conical flask
  • add anhydrous sodium sulfate to dry until liwuid clear/ stops clumping
  • decant and reqeigh
