Core Muscles Flashcards
is the central part
of your body.
It includes your pelvis, lower
back, hips and stomach.
The stomach muscles
sometimes are called abs.
Core muscle
6 Major muscles of core
- Diaphragm
- Rectus Abdominis
- Internal and External Obliques
- Transverse Abdominis
- Pelvic Floor
- Spinal Erectors
This is the classic six-pack
muscle.
It helps you bend forward, like
when you do a situp, explains
Nick Occhipinti, certified
strength and conditioning coach.
It also helps you lift your legs
when your upper body is fixed,
for instance, when you do a
hanging leg raise.
Rectus Abdominis
mostly used to breathe,
which creates core
tension that allows us
to stabilize and
strengthen all the
muscles of the core.
Diaphragm
The “corset” muscle,
It contributes to added stability
because of how it attaches to
the sides of the spine,”
People with back pain often
have a poorly-functioning
_____-_______
Transverse Abdominis
“These are large muscles
on our flanks that extend from
both sides of our body all along
the ribs and attach to the sides of
the rectus abdominis,”
“These muscles are responsible
for some core rotation both to and
away.
Internal and External Obliques
This is a group of muscles
found at the bottom of the
core. without a stable base, it’s
difficult to work on
strengthening the other
muscles,
Pelvic floor
a group of muscles that run along the back of the spine. They are responsible for extending and stabilizing the spine, and also help with posture and movement.

3 Minor core muscles
Latissimus Dorsi
Gluteuz Maximus
Trapezius
This minor muscle is a
broad, flat muscle that occupies
the majority of the lower
posterior thorax.
The muscle’s primary function is
of the upper extremity but is also
considered to be a respiratory
accessory muscle.
Latissimus Dorsi
This minor muscle is the largest and
heaviest muscle in the body.
It is the most superficial of all gluteal
muscles that are located at the
posterior aspect of the hip joint.
It is the largest muscle at the hip
representing 16% of the total
cross-sectional area.
Gluteus maximus covers all of the
gluteal muscles except for the
antero_superior third of the Glutes
medius.
Gluteuz Maximus
This minor muscle is a broad, flat,
superficial muscle extending
from the cervical to thoracic
region on the posterior
aspect of the neck and trunk.
The human _______ muscle
has an origin that is more
extensive than that of any
other body muscle.
Trapezius
3 parts of the trapezius muscle
Descending (superior)
Ascending (inferior)
Middle
The muscle contributes to
scapulohumeral rhythm through
attachments on the clavicle and
scapula, and to head balance through
muscular control of the cervical spine.
What is the Function of Core Muscles?
The core muscles have two main functions:
1. To spare the spine from excessive
load.
2. To transfer force from the lower
body to the upper body and vice
versa. Having a strong, stable core
helps us to prevent injuries and
allows us to perform at our best.
