Many diseases at the time were very deadly. The flu of 1918 killed many people

Machine Politics
A situation where a powerful group or organization controls and manipulates the political process for its own benefit.
Vice and Crime
Police at the time protected saloons, brothels, opium dens, and casinos
Lynching
Killing people without a fair trial, especially black people
Segregation
Grows more and more with new laws in the south and color lines in the north
Black Migration
African Americans moved north because of the bad social conditions
Separate spheres
Men in the public sphere do work and are in politics, and women are in private spheres doing housework
Coverture
Married women and everything she owned were owned by her husband
Suffrage (race, gender)
Women fought for rights; wanted 15 amendment to include their rights
Alpha suffrage club- Chicago group who fought for African Americans women’s rights.
Accidents
Industrial accidents were extremely common. 1 in 500 Pittsburgh workers died every year
Worker rights
Workers wanted “accident insurance” because the conditions were so bad
Corporate Power
Examples: Railraods, Grain elevators, Storage for transport, Owned by RRs, Monopolies
Radicalism
It created space for liberal middle- class reforms
Temperance
People were drinking so much a day, it became a huge problem
Led to temperance movement to create better laws
