Core Concepts of Envo Science #2 Flashcards
1
Q
Define: Primary Succession
A
Occurs when new land is formed or bare rock is exposed, providing a habitat that can be colonised for the first time.
Weathering and other natural forces break down the substrate, rock, enough for the establishment of lichens with few soil requirements, known as pioneer species, which must be adapted to extreme abiotic conditions.
Lichens begin to break down rocks, forming sand. As lichens die and are broken down by decomposers, a thin layer of soil forms and the nitrogen cycle begins.
