assimilation
the process where a minority cultural group is dominated by another, with the minority taking on the majority’s values, behaviours and beliefs

includes wider-social structure that helps shape the social and cultural world, and examines how they relate to the wider society they are apart of
meso level
the middle ground where individuals interact within groups, e.g. schools. it focuses on relationships between middle level structures and the individual
micro level
where individuals’ everyday actions and social interactions occur. it focuses on the patterns of social interaction at an individual level
modernisation
social change in which apparently less advanced societies adopt the technologies of more advance societies, e.g. technology
norms
shared expectations of behaviours that are considered to be socially and culturally acceptable
nuclear family
a family consisting of two parents and their children
paternalism
people in authority who restrict the freedom of others within society, acting within their perceived best interests
