Core Flashcards
Feline core
Rabies
And the Combination vaccine (FVRCP)
- Feline viral rhinotracheitis [FHV-1] (herpesvirus)
- calcivirus (FCV)
- Feline Panleukopenia (FPV)
What are the core vaccines for dogs?
Rabies
Canine distemper virus
Canine adenovirus, type 2 injectable
Canine parvovirus
Rabies feline
Caused by
Effects
Rhabdovirus
Effects the NS.
Spread through saliva and CNS tissue is most commonly transmitted though bite wounds
Rabies natural reservoir
Skunks, bats, foxes, & coyotes
Rabies cat symp.
Neurological signs, such as increased aggression, agitation, solitude seeking, incoordination, and/or paralysis
Reportable diseases
Rabies
Feline viral Rhinotracheitis (FHV-1) and Calicivirus (FCV) what is it? What are signs?
Core- part of combination
A herpesvirus that frequent cause of upper respiratory disease in cats
Common clinical signs include sneezing, ocular & nasal discharge, & fever
What is Calicivirus (FCV) & signs
Feline Core- combination (FVRCP)vaccine
Many strains & common cause of upper respiratory disease in cats
Signs ORAL ulceration,
And sneezing, nasal & ocular discharge, & fever (like rhinotracheitis)
How are FCV and FHV-1 shed?
Shed via oropharyngeal, conjunctival, & nasal secretions for up to 3 weeks
In addition Calicivirus is shed in urine & feces
Direct contact is most common cause
Indirect contact w/ infectious secretions is possible
Latent infections are normal w/ feline herpes & involves the virus laying dormant w/in cat for a period of time
Carrier state possible, but tend to shed continuously
How long can FCV and FHV last in environment?
Calicivirus can last longer ( up to a week)
Herpesviruses can only lasts 24 hours
Cautions and side effects of FCV & FHV-1
Both modified live and inactivated vaccines are available, and both have good efficacy
But both do not protect against Carrier state:
The Calicivirus doesn’t protect against all strains
It is possible to develop my own signs of upper respiratory disease, especially following intranasal vaccine, and lameness may develop secondary to Calicivirus component of vaccine
Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) is caused by
Core w/ combination
Parvovirus
High contagious & found in environment
Feline Panleukopenia signs
Core
Fever, lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, vomiting, & diarrhea
Sudden death possible in younger cats
Low white cell count
Neurological signs are possible because infection during late gestation or 1st few weeks of life can lead to cerebellar hypoplasia
Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) shed Core
Shed in all body secretions, especially urine/feces
And can last in environment for a year
Direct contact w/ cat or secretion is most common cause of viral spread
FPV vaccines available
vaccines are available in injectable form and provide excellent immunity or in intranasal modified live vaccine (but it is possible or modified live vaccines to cause cerebellar disease in fetuses or neonates, so this vaccine type should not be administered to kitten younger than 4wks of age or pregnant queens)
