How do you solve a hidden quadratic?
Substitute the power of x for y, then solve the quadratic, replacing y with the power of x at the end
How do you find the equation of a tangent to a circle at a given point?
Find the gradient of the radius to the point, then find the perpendicular gradient (tangent gradient) and use this with the point coordinates to find the full equation
How do you find the point where a circle meets the y-axis?
Make x equal to 0, leaving (-a)^2+(y-b)^2=r^2
How do you find stationary points?
dy/dx =0
DO NOT USE THE SECOND DIFFERENTIAL!!
What do you use the second differential for?
Determining the nature of a stationary point i.e. min, max or point of inflection
If the 2nd differential =0, what is the nature of the stationary point?
Point of inflection
What is the discriminant?
b^2-4ac
How do you find a perpendicular gradient?
-1/given gradient
If you multiply a polynomial with 3 terms by one with 4, how many terms does the answer have?
4*3=12 terms
When solving a quadratic inequality, what should you use to help?
A graph sketch, with arrows indicating above or below 0
If the coefficient of the largest power in an even function is negative, what changes about the graph?
It becomes n shaped instead of u shaped
