Gather equipment, wash hands, identify client

Provide privacy and explain procedure to parents. Assess their comfort level.

Assess the abdominal area for redness, discharge or foul odor, look for bleeding from the cord.

A
Dip cotton swab in cleaning agent as per policy and clear around the base of the cord where it joins the skin. Lift the cord away from the infant’s abdomen to facilitate cleansing of all areas.

A
The cord stump is allowed to dry. If cord is dry within 24 hrs, clamp can be removed.
