Intellectual property
Property that is the result of mental labour.
↳It cannot be an idea; it has to be published.
It is not only protected by the Copyright law.
↳It also has to be covered by the EULA contract (End User License Agreement).
Types of EULAs
- Commercial
- Shareware
- Freeware
- Open Source
- Public domain
Copyright Act
legal document that explains the copyright law (The Copyright Act 1968 for Australia)
It protects intellectual property
How is something copyrighted?
Copyright, in a work of authorship, immediately becomes the property of the author who created it at the moment it is put into fixed form / published.
Who owns copyright?
Owned by creator of the piece of work, unless ownership and the rights of the intellectual property are transferred.
EULA (End user license agreement)
Legal contract between software developer (or vendor) and the user of the software.
Site License
- Software license that allows user to install a software onto several machines simultaneously.
- Specifies the number of machines that can run a software, or the specific location where the software can be run.
- Commonly used to extend commercial or shareware licenses so software can run on multiple machines at reduced costs.
Creative Commons license
- Free/Public copyright licenses that authors use to indicate how they would like their work to be used or shared legally.
License
Formal permission or authority to use a product
Agreement
Mutual agreement or contract between 2 parties
Term
Period of time agreement is in force
Warranty
A guarantee on certain aspects of the software
Limited Use
Restricted use of the product (e.g. no altering, modifying or running it on multiple machines)
Liability
Obligation or debt as a consequence of an event
Program
Referring to computer software stored on the media
