Public domain
Software that is not covered by copyright at all

Shareware
Software covered by copyright while still being distributed freely, although a licence must be purchased to continue using it beyond a trial period

Software that is covered by copyright, but copies can be made, distributed and altered. Modified products must also be freeware.

Open source (GNU Licence)
GNU = General Public Licence
Covered by copyright law, but still remove many traditional copyrights. Developed collaboratively and available to all to modify and redistribute, so long as the author is recognised and the modified products are released under the same licence.

Site licence
Specifies things like the number of machines software can be used on or the locations they can be installed at. They are usually used to extend other kinds of licences to reduce cost.

Creative commons
Alters how copyrighted material can be used. Not commonly used for software products, and more common in artistic works like photographs, music, films, etc. It allows the work to be distributed for non-commercial purposes, as long as the author is acknowledged.

The sole legal right to produce or reproduce and literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work, now extended to include software.

Software licence
Formal permission of authority to use a product. In relation to software, licences are almost always non-exclusive, meaning it can be licensed to multiple users. The licence does not five users ownership of the software, rather they are granted the right to use the software.
