Copper, chromium, ions and transition metals Flashcards
1
Q
Why is it that for copper and chromium there is only 1 electron in the 4s orbital?
A
Placing an electron into the 3d orbital created either a full or half filled 3rd orbital
Gives the atom increased stability
2
Q
What happens when ions are formed?
A
Electrons are either lost or gained
Electrons will be lost from the outer electrons shells when positive ions are formed or will be added to the outer energy levels when negative ions are formed
3
Q
What happens to transition metal ions?
A
4s electrons are always lost before the 3d electrons
