Stages of exacerbation of COPD
Mild - Controllable with increased usual medications
Moderate - Requires systemic corticosteroids and/or antibiotics
Severe - Requires hospitalisation
What is a rescue pack?
Supply of steroids to be started if increased shortness of breath affecting activities of daily living (ADLs)
Antibiotics if they have more or discoloured sputum
What is RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus
When is hospitalisation considered in severe COPD?
Severe breathlessness, rapid onset of symptoms, acute confusion, cyanosis, worsening peripheral oedema, or impaired consciousness
The person is unable to cope or lives alone
reduction in activities of daily living, is confined to bed, or is on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT)
Significant comorbidity
Low oxygen saturation (less than 90%) on pulse oximetry
What is the step up in COPD treatment from a SABA?
LABA and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)
