COPD Flashcards
Define COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease that is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation that is due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases.
Define COPD using spirometry
the presence of a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC < 0.70 confirms the presence of persistent airflow limitation.
What are the 2 pathological processes occurring in COPD
Chronic bronchitis
Emphysema
Define chronic bronchitis
Persistent cough the produces sputum and mucous for >3/12 for 2 consecutive years
Define emphysema
Histological diagnosis of dilation and obstruction of the airways distal to the terminal bronchioles.
Way are the risk factors for developing COPD
What is the differential diagnoses for COPD
What are the severity assessment tools for COPS
GOLD criteria
Modified British medical research scale
COPD assessment test
ABC assessment test
What is the aim kf GOLD Criteria
Spirometric classification of COPD severity based on post bronchodilator FEV1
What are the severity stages of the GoLD criteria?
Define respiratory failure
PaO2 <60mmHg with or without PaCO2 > 50 mm Hg while breathing air at sea level.
Defines severity of COPD based on mMRC score
