Coordination of response Flashcards
What must organisms do to survive
-organisms must find favourable external conditions e.g avoiding places that are too hot
-find food
-avoid harm
How do organisms detect changes in the environment
-Receptor cells detect stimuli
-Receptor cells can be found in sense organs (e.g nose eyes) or inside of the body (e.g pacinian corpuscle pressure receptors)
Effectors
Part of the body that responds (muscle or gland)
what are hormones
-Hormones (known as chemical messengers) are chemical substances produced by the endocrine glands and transported by the blood
What are the functions of hormones
-Hormones transmit information from one part of the body to another
-Hormones cause a change by altering the activity of one or more target organs by leaving the blood and binding to specific receptors on the cell surface membrane of the target organ
When are hormones used
-Hormones are used to control functions that do not require instant responses
-This is because hormones are slower in action than electrical impulses
Endocrine system + glands
-Endocrine glands that secrete hormones in animals is collectively known as the endocrine system
-Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the blood
-Endocrine glands can be stimulated to secrete hormones by either the action of another hormone or the arrival of a nerve impulse
Pathway of hormone action + high blood pressure example
Stimuli (high blood pressure)—Receptor (receptors in the pancreas)—Hormone (insulin)—Effector (liver cells)
