Coordination And Gait Flashcards
Testing for cerebellar ataxia
stance
Testing gait (normal gait and tandem gait)
Romberg’s sign/ Pronator drift- feet together for 30 secs. Hands up and eyes closed—> sign of cerebellar ataxia
Finger- nose test- co ordination impairment. Usually involves cerebellum—> cerebellar lesion and is related to dysmetria which involves inappropriate timing of muscle activity
Heel/ shin test- flex one knee up and stroke down shin
Dysdiadochokinesis- supinate and pronate on bottom hand
Gait and stance reliant upon
Vision, sensation, proprioception, motor output etc
Cerebellar ataxia= unsteadiness when eyes open. Leads to broad based unsteady gait- occurs when walking heel to toe in straight line. Impossible
Instability occurring worse when eye closed= proprioceptive sensory loss (sensory ataxia)
Types of gait
Waddling
Spastic
Shuffling
Steppage
Scissor
Hemiplegic
