Coordination Flashcards
Name the six key parts of a neurone + key features
Cell body- Large amounts of RER. Production of neurotransmitters and proteins. Dendrons- Small extensions of cell, subdivide into dendrites. Carry nerve impulses towards cell body. Axon- Single long fibre that carries impulses away from cell body. Schwann cell-Surround the axon, protecting and electrically insulating it. Carry out phagocytosis (removal of cell debris) and play a part in nerve regeneration. Wrapped round axon many times in layers. Myelin sheath- Membranes of schwann cells. Rich in lipid- myelin. Nodes of Ranvier- Gaps between Schwann cells. No myelin sheath. 2-3 um long and occur every 1-3mm.
