Coordinated Body Systems Flashcards
What is the main purpose of the digestive system?
Converts food into smaller molecules that the body can use.
What are proteins broken down into?
amino acids
What are lipids broken down into?
fatty acids
What are carbohydrates broken down into?
glucose
What organs are involved in the digestive tract?
mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
What is the main purpose of the respiratory system?
Obtains oxygen and brings it into the blood stream for cellular respiration and removes CO2.
What is gas exchange?
Occurs in the alveoli where CO2 is removed from the blood and oxygen moves into the blood due to diffusion
What is the main purpose of the circulatory system?
- Transports materials and waste products all around the body
What materials does the circulatory system transport around the body?
Transports: CO2 & O2, nutrients, metabolic waste, blood cells, circulates hormones
What are properties of arteries?
Thick muscular walls → to be able to withstand blood under high pressure
What are properties of veins?
-Muscle & Elastic fibres
- Thin due to having to withstand less blood pressure
What are properties of capilleries
Small and fits around cells (one cell thick)
