Conveyors Flashcards
Name 4 main components of a belt conveyor system.
belts, idlers, take-up devices, loading and unloading devices
What is the purpose of a tripper?
To allow the discharge of material at any point along the length of the conveyor.
What are the 3 main components of a typical belt in a belt conveyor?
top cover, carcass, bottom cover
What portion of the belt provides the strength and tension?
the carcass
Name 4 functions of an automatic gravity take-up on a belt conveyor.
maintains tension, removes slack on start-up, provides reserve belt material for splicing, allows for expansion/contraction of belt
What type of splice to steel cable belts require?
hot vulcanized splice
What type of mechanical splice can be used to repair damaged sections of belt?
bolted solid plate type
What type of splicing is usually the strongest, and up to what percentage of belt strength can it achieve?
hot vulcanizing, up to 90% of belt strength
What type of pulley is used to prevent material build up between the belt and pulley, and are usually used on slow-speed conveyors?
self-cleaning or wing pulleys
What type of pulley is used to increase the arc of contact on a drive pulley?
snub pulley
In a addition to increasing the arc of contact, what else can be used to increase friction between the belt and pulley?
lagging
Name the 3 main troughing angles.
20 deg, 35 deg, 45 deg
What is used in a trough conveyor to level or trough the belt before it goes over the head or tail pulley, and to prevent belt edge stretching?
transition idlers
What type of idlers are installed at the loading points to prevent belt damage?
impact idlers (or impact cradle)
What type of return idlers would be used when transporting sticky material?
spiral rubber disc
What are conditions are preferred when feeding material from the loading chute to the belt?
that the material is fed at the same speed and in the same direction of the belt
What are installed to prevent material from spilling at loading points?
sideboards and skirts
What should skirting material and V plow rubber never be made from?
old belting
What are several factors that affect belt tracking?
frame damage, foundation settling, off-centre loading, incorrect belt splice (not square), take-up carriage out of line, incorrect belt tension, material build-up on idlers
What angles may return idlers be inclined at to form a V on some long belts?
10 deg or 20 deg
Where is a V plow installed on a troughing conveyor, and what is its purpose?
Installed before the tail pulley to clean the carrying side of the belt.
Name 3 methods used to remove tramp iron from the material on a belt conveyor.
suspended magnet, magnetic head pulley, separate magnetic belt above discharge
What is the minimum clearance recommended between the skirt boards and the conveyor belt?
1”
What must you be careful not to do when setting a threaded (screw) take-up
take care not to over-tension the belt
What is the rubber adhesive compound called that binds the plies together on a belt conveyor belt?
friction
What is the open mesh called used to reinforce the belt against longitudinal breaking under impact?
breaker fabric
