Convergent and Divergent Evolution Flashcards
What is divergent evolution?
Organisms that are closely related developing different traits through natural selection.
What is convergent evolution?
Organisms that are not closely related developing similar traits in response to similar selection pressures.
What is microevolution?
Small changes that occur in genetic biodiversity of a species over time in response to natural selection.
What is speciation?
The formation of two or more distinctive species from one ancestral species.
What is reproductive isolation?
Prevention of mating between members of a species due to physical separation or variation in traits involved in mating.
What is punctuated equilibrium?
Organisms undergoing long periods of no change that are punctuated by rare episodes in rapid change.
What evidence promoted the idea of punctuated equilibrium?
The Fossil Record.
What is the graduation model?
Where natural selection occurs continuously and gradually to accumulate changes over time.
