Conventional & Non-conventional Farming. Flashcards
What is conventional ?
Conventional farming refers to traditional farming methods.
What is Non-conventional?
Non-conventional refers to modern farming techniques.
What is the difference between
Conventional and Non-Conventional farming?
What is aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture & hydroponics.
What are the benefits of aquaponics?
- Reduce water use
- Reduce chemical use
- Reduce pesticide use, when set up in a greenhouse
- Reduce erosion, by eliminating the need to ploughing the soil.
- Reduce running costs compared to a conventional horticultural farm.
What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the term used to describe crop production systems in which plants are grown without soil.
The benefits of hydroponics include:
- Reduce transplanting shock.
- Minimal soil-borne pests and diseases.
- Easier weed control.
- Crops can be harvested earlier.
- Yields are higher.
What are the differences between
Aquaponics & Hydroponics?
What is Grow box system?
This forming method requires the use of an enclosed box-like structure filled with a special mixed medium inside the box .
Soil is not used in making the medium.
Eg. used is the box: sharp sand, red sand, saw dust, and fertilizer.
What is Trough culture:
Trough culture is the producing of crops in containers.
Eg. Buckets, barrels, plastic bottles, and crates.
What is Urban farming:
Urban farming is farming, processing and selling food in the town/city areas.
What is Peri-Urban farming :
Peri-Urban farming, processing and selling food around/close to the town areas. (Sub-urban).
What is Organic Farming:
Organic farming is the production of plants and animals without using artificial or inorganic chemicals.
