Convection currents and Plate boundaries Flashcards
Plate tectonics
What makes the tectonic plates move?
The heat from the core rises to the mantle cooling it down. then the cool air falls.
What are convection currents?
The movement of tectonic plates.
What does convection currents cause?
The movement of continental and oceanic plate boundaries.
What is a destructive (collision zone) plate boundary?
Two continetal plates which move towards eachother causing the land to buckle and creates fold mountains. The plate that is forced downwards is heated by the mantle and melts. Th magma can rise and create a volcano.
What are features of destructive (collision zone) plate boundaries?
Fold mountains, Earthquakes and Volcanoes
What is a conservative plate boundary?
Two plates which move past each other at different speeds allowing friction and pressure to build. The sudden release of pressure creates earthquakes.
What are features of conservative plate boundaries?
Earthquakes
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Plates which move apart creating a gap letting magma rise from the mantle creating mid ocean ridges.
What are features of constructive plate boundaries?
mid ocean ridges and volcanoes
What is a destructive (subduction zone) plate boundary?
An oceanic and continental plate moves towards each other making the oceanic plate go under the continental plate creating a deep sea trench. The friction build pressure which creates an earthquake when released. The oceanic plate melts making magma which rises causing a volcano
What are features of destructive (subduction zone) plate boundaries?
