Convection Flashcards
What is convection?
When air is moved by heated or cooled fluids.
Give an example of convection?
A radiator
Why are radiators placed at the bottom of the room?
Hot air rises upwards and then cools and falls back down to the radiator to be heated up again. This a convectional current.
Why is the cooling plate of a fridge located at the top?
The cooling plate cools the hot air that has risen and the cool air then falls and eventually rises up again to be cooled.
Do the particles expand when a substance heats up?
NO!!! The particles vibrate at a higher amplitude therefore the substance expands as there is more space between each particle.
What is convectional energy transfer?
When heat is transferred through a substance.
How can we reduce convectional energy transfer and what is an example of this?
By holding or trapping the fluid in place. An example of this is a wetsuit, or a thermal skin top.
How can we maximise convection?
Allo wthe fluid to move freely.
