convection Flashcards
1
Q
what is convection?
A
the transfer of energy from hot to cold by the movement of particles in fluids (liquids and gasses)
2
Q
how does convection occur?
A
convection occurs when a gas or liquid moves and carries heat energy with it
3
Q
what happens when a fluid is heated? what does it mean? and what is it called?
A
particles gain kinetic energy and spread out, the fluid expands
- this means that it becomes less dense than the colder fluid around it causing the fluid to try and float over the colder fluid.
- this is called a convection current
4
Q
what are some of the examples where convection current occur?
A
- lava lamp
- hot air balloon
- fridge
- kettle
5
Q
heat energy is transferred from…
A
hot places to cooler places by convection
