controlling variables Flashcards
what is randomisation
randomising stimuli so researcher is not in control of the way its presented.
what is random allocation
an attempt to control participant variables in an independent groups design which ensures that each participant has the same chance of being allocated in each condition
what is standardisation
using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants.
all ppts = same info, environment and experience
what is counterbalancing
half participants will do AB half will do BA
Doesn’t remove order effects just balances them out between conditions
what is single blind
ppts dont know which condition they are in (eg. whether they take the drug or placebo)
what is double blind
neither ppts or researcher knows what the conditions are.
