Controlling Plant Growth Flashcards
1
Q
What are auxins responsible for?
A
Controlling plant growth.
2
Q
What happens when the tip of a shoot is broken off from a plant?
A
The plant starts to grow side branches from lateral buds which were dormant.
3
Q
How might auxin affect the level of abscisic acid in lateral buds?
A
It may be that high auxin levels in the shoot get abscisic acid levels in the bud high. When the tip (source of auxin is removed), abscisic acids levels fall and so the bud can grow.
4
Q
What effect does applying cytokinins directly to lateral buds have?
A
Overrides apical dominance effect.
5
Q
What two things are gibberellins responsible for?
A
- Control of stem elongation
- Seed germination
