Controlling Heat Flow Map Flashcards
What three specific functions are required to ‘control heat flow’
1/ ‘Controlling conduction of heat’
2/ ‘Controlling radiation of heat’
3/ ‘Utilising Thermal Mass’
What are the two overall reasons of ‘controlling heat flow’?
1/ Preventing wasted energy on artificially air-conditioning.
2/ Preventing water damage from condensation and frost on interior surfaces.
What is the narrower logic of ‘controlling the conduction of heat’ in regards to density.
1/ Because most building materials are dense, they conduct a lot of heat. Materials with lower densities have higher thermal resistance, and are almost always added to a building envelope to control the conduction of heat.
What are bits of narrower logic on ‘controlling the two types of radiation of heat’?
1/ Radiant solar heat can be predicted very accurately because it strikes a particular spot at any one time.
2/ Radiant terrestrial heat on the other hand can only be reflected efficiently by bright, metallic surfaces.
What are two bits of narrower logic on ‘utilising thermal mass’?
1/ In hot climates with large cyclical daily temperature fluctuations, thermal mass can be used to an advantage – to delay fluctuations and keep interior temperatures relatively stable.
2/ Temperature fluctuations can be also caused internally by terrestrial heat from machinery. Thermal mass can be used to absorb this heat during the day when the machines are working, and pump it back into the enclosure at night when they are turned off.
What three detail patterns ‘control the conduction of heat’?
1/ thermal insulation
2/ thermal break
3/ multiple glazing
What three detail patterns ‘control the radiation of heat’?
1/ white and bright surfaces
2/ reflective glazing
3/ reflective surfaces and airspace
What pattern detail ‘utilises thermal mass’?
1/ outside-insulated thermal mass
