Controlling and influencing attitudes Flashcards
What is propaganda?
Propaganda in Germany was widely used by the Nazis as a method for getting their message out to the German people.
How did Nazis promote propaganda?
The Nazis used posters and radio broadcasts to great effect. Posters, films and radio were all used to show how great the Nazis were and how they were saving Germany from the Weimar Republic.
Who was in charge of propaganda?
The creation of Propaganda was given to Joseph Goebbels,
What was the media like back then?
These were huge industries and many people read newspapers everyday as there was no other way to find out what was going on.
WHy did the Nazi want to control the media?
The Nazis wanted to control all aspects of this media so that their message was pure and no one could criticise what the Nazis were doing.
How was radio used as propaganda?
Radio was also censored in the same way as newspapers. Goebbels and the Nazis controlled all output on them and made sure that all Germans could hear. The Nazis created cheap radios which were sold to Germans in order that they could hear the Nazi messages at home. Furthermore, the Nazis placed loudspeakers in public places so that no matter where you were you would hear the Nazi propaganda over the airwaves
What did Hitler want to use the Berlin Olympics for?
Hitler wanted to use the 1936 Olympics as a piece of propaganda to demonstrate the superiority of Nazi Germany and the Aryan race.
The Nazis used the Games as a propaganda showpiece and all aspects of Nazi Germany in the best light.
What did Nazis believe in culture?
The Nazis believed that many of the cultural revolutions that had occurred during the Weimar Republic were wrong and immoral. As such they placed great importance on culture which supported their ideals. Culture which showcased the story of Germany and complemented the ideas of self sacrifice, family values and the superiority of the German race were prized, whilst ideas contrary to this were restricted or removed.
How was culture controlled?
Culture, therefore, like many things in Germany, was heavily controlled. The Reich Chamber of Culture opened in 1933 and was controlled by Goebbels and the Propaganda Ministry. They effectively policed the culture in Nazi Germany and ensured it met the ideas of Nazi beliefs. They controlled art, architecture, music, film and literature. Artists had to register wit the Chamber of Culture who granted licences. If an artist did not have an license then they were forbidden to produce or sell their artwork. The Nazis also removed any art work from galleries which did not fit with their ideals. These moves were supported by the Gestapo who kept artists in check with visits to studios and galleries to check that work was being produced in accordance with their wishes.
WHy did thenazi control literature?
As with other forms of culture, the Nazis controlled literature. They wanted to have books which would support the ideals of the party, emphasised the successes of Germany and the beliefs of the supremacy of the German people.
What did the nazi do in literature to increase their propanganda?
To this end, the Nazis censored published books and in many cases banned the authors entirely. Books were removed from libraries, universities, and shops to be burned on bonfires. Student Nazis burned thousands of books which were seen as anti-Nazi in a huge demonstration in May 1933.
If authors wanted to produce new works, they must have their work approved by the Reich Chamber of Culture.
How did the Nazi use architecture to help them?
The Nazis used buildings to emphasise their power over Germany. Like much of their cultural control they disapproved of modern buildings that had been constructed in the Weimar Republic. The Nazis had an official architect to design all their buildings. Albert Speer was the Nazi official architect and was a favourite of Hitler.
