What is a schedule I drug?
no accepted medical use in the US, high abuse potential
ex: heroin, cannabis, LSD
What is a schedule II drug?
accepted medical use for treatment w/ severe restrictions, high abuse potential
ex: oxy, hydro, amphetamine, codeine, cocaine
What is a schedule three drug?
abuse potential less, may lead to moderate or low dependence
ex: buprenorphine, dronabinol, codeineD
Do you need a license for prescription of buprenorphine?
yes, extra registration and licensure
What is a schedule IV drug?
low potential for abuse and may lead to limited dependence
ex: anxiolytics (carisoprodol, benzos, modafinil)
What is a schedule V drug?
low potential for abuse, limited dependence, may be OTC
ex: codeine
If you are writing a controlled substance what must you include?
address of patient, address of prescriber, prescriber’s DEA number
What are the 10 prescribing requirements?

In Missouri what are the Class II limitations?
1) can only prescribe hydrocodone products w/ limits on quantity
2) NON refillable

1) can prescribe w/ quantity limitations
2) no refills allowed from PA

full authority – refill up to 6 months, RX valid for 6 months, 90 day supply limit
When writing as a PA, what must you include?
the name, telephone number, address of both physician and prescribing PA
How do hospital order prescriptions work?
medication order by prescriber –> pharmacist verifies –> nursing administers verified medication
What do you need to include in a CPOE?
medication, dosage form, dosage, frequency, specil instuctions, any PRNs
