A
- Similar to Durkheim - social order based on share values, socialisation through institutions
- Asks why most people don’t commit crime
- All humans suffer from weaknesses that make them unable to resist temptation - turn to crim
- Social bonds encourage people to exercise self control

A
- Recognises importance of socialisation and social control in maintaining cohesive society
- Assumes those who commit C&D have broken away - Merton & Matza say some criminals are committed
- Doesn’t recognise possibility of deviance with tight social bonds
- Doesn’t explain why some have weaker bonds than others
