Control Theory (Hirschi) Flashcards
What does the control theory explain?
The control theory by Hirschi explains different levels of criminality between Asians and Black ethnic groups
What does Hirschi say about Asians and crime?
Asians consider family honour (izzat) and reputation when it comes to commiting crime. They get heavily shunned by the community if they were to commit crime.
They are also generally more religious and traditional so that keeps them away from committing as much crime
What is the difference between black and Asian communities when they commit crime?
Black people arent as bothered by family honour and arent as relgious
Evaluate Hirschi control theory
Hirschi makes sweeping assumptions about black and asian groups and ignores individual differences
Black people get more stopped by police than asians
