Control of Respiration Flashcards
What kind of control is respiration under?
Autonomic control
Where is rhythm generated for respiration?
Rhythm is generated by the medulla specifically the Botzinger complex
What does the Botzinger complex do?
They drive the respiratory motoneurons and interneurons of the spinal cord.
What are two peripheral chemoreceptors?
Carotid and aortic
Describe two features of the carotid peripheral chemoreceptor.
- They are small nodules at the bifurcation of the common carotid
- Dominant effect senses at low O2
Where are aortic peripheral chemoreceptors found?
Aortic bodies are found in the aortic arch
What stimulates the peripheral chemoreceptors?
Low partial pressure of oxygen & high partial pressure of carbon dioxide
Which of the peripheral chemoreceptors responses to increased partial pressure of carbon dioxide and a decrease in pH. This peripheral chemoreceptor is also important in exercise and is the SOLE detector of arterial pH.
Carotid peripheral chemoreceptors
What chemoreceptor is located close to the ventral surface of the medulla?
Central chemoreceptor
How does a central chemoreceptor detect changes in the blood?
They bind protons in the brain they
