control of heart rate Flashcards
What’s the autonomic nervous system
The self-governing part of the motor nervous system which controls the involuntary (subconscious) activities of internal muscles and glands.
What receptors are involved in control of heart rate and where are they located?
Chemoreceptors and pressure receptors located in the aorta and in the carotid arteries
What is the effector in the control of heart rate?
The sinoatrial node - SA node - SAN
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system
What region of the brain controls heart rate?
The medulla oblongata - it has two centres
Describe the two routes for messages to travel from the medulla oblongata to the sinoatrial node
The centre that increases heart rate sends messages to the SA node via the sympathetic nervous system;
The centre that decreases heart rate sends messages to the SA node via the parasympathetic nervous system.
What factors determine which centres in the medulla oblongata are stimulated?
Messages from chemoreceptors and pressure receptors with information about chemical changes in the blood and pressure changes in the blood.
