Control of BP Flashcards
Normal adult BP
90/60mmHg - 120/80mmHg
BP (clinic) for Stage 1 hypertension
> 140/90mmHg
BP (clinic) Stage 2 hypertension
> 160/100 mmHg
BP (clinic) for Severe hypertension
> 180 systolic / 110> diastolic
Cause for hypertension
Primary hypertension: unknown (95%)
Secondary hypertension:
-renovascular disease
-chronic renal
-hyperaldosteronism
-Cushing’s syndrome
Why is it important to treat hypertension
Asymptomatic
-can have unseen effects such as
Heart failure, MI, stroke, renal failure, retinopathy
How is BP regulated
Short and long term regulation
Short term:
-baroreceptor reflex
Function of baroreceptor reflex
-adjust sympathetic & parasympathetic inputs to the heart to alter cardiac output
-adjust sympathetic input to peripheral resistance vessels to alter TPR
Medium & longer term control of BP
-control interaction with
-directed at controlling sodium balance, extracellular olume
