CONTRAST STUDIES OF GIT Flashcards
Advantages of Contrast Studies
u Hollow organs that are air-filled can be identified on Plain radiographs u But their real contour and inner mucosa cannot be clearly seen
Introduction of contrast coats the lining and reveals the condition of the mucosa and caliber of the lumen
Plain Film of abdomen showing the stomach bubble
Contrast Study of the stomach showing the mucosa of the stomach
Disadvantages ContraST STUDY
u Patient may not be able to tolerate the procedure
u May have allergy to the contrast
u Some procedures are contraindicated under certain conditions
u Extravasations of barium from GI Tract may cause peritonitis
u Radiation
Types of Contrast Examinations
u Esophagogram
Barium meal or Upper GI Series; Small Intestinal Series
u Enterocylsis
u Barium enema
Types of Contrast Agents
u Oral/ Rectal contrast agents
u Barium – barium sulphate
u Water soluble – iodinated compounds
u (ionic) meglumine diatrizoate (Gastrograffin
) u (non-ionic) – iopamidol (Niopam)
u Effervescent Granules/Air u Carbex granules – release carbon-di-oxide
Effervescent granules -
release carbon-di-oxide which create the air contrast with liquid barium sulphate suspension
