Advantages of Contrast Studies

A

u Hollow organs that are air-filled can be identified on Plain radiographs u But their real contour and inner mucosa cannot be clearly seen

 Introduction of contrast coats the lining and reveals the condition of the mucosa and caliber of the lumen

Disadvantages ContraST STUDY

A

u Patient may not be able to tolerate the procedure
u May have allergy to the contrast
u Some procedures are contraindicated under certain conditions
u Extravasations of barium from GI Tract may cause peritonitis
u Radiation
