Contraint based models of parsing Flashcards
what is the constraint based model of parsing
- Sentence interpretation the product of interaction between multiple constraints/sources of information (i.e. syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and frequency- based information), opposite to GPM, consider loads dif type info.
- Current interpretation one most strongly supported by these multiple constraints and hence most active – inter = one most favoured by all available constraints interacting from start.
- Garden paths occur when the correct analysis of a local ambiguity receives little activation
what did altmann and steedman conclude
lots of evidence that there is an interactioin between contextual info, it affects the way you build structure from the beginning.
what did Trueswell et al conclude
evidence for interactive processing - against GPM
context has an early effect- goes aginst GPM - brings up issue of controlling context
strong semantics- makes MA impossible
problems with this model
Predicts effects but how does it deal with cases when you do follow parsing principles when they are crazy?
Want one that can explain behaviour in all the experiments.
Could argue methodology isn’t good.
framework of theory?
suggests GPM is wrong,
• Needs to be developed so that it makes more precise predictions about exactly when interaction effects will occur and when they will not
• Constraint based model= better as a criticism of the GPM than it is as a model of sentence processing than a model in its own right.
• GPM makes clear predictions like the sausage one. The constraint model makes interaction predictions but doesn’t predict when you will get them and when you won’t. Want a model that tells you what they are, how they will react.
• Framework than a model
• Model of parsing has to be something like this but too vague needs developing.
