- DVT
- PVD
- CHF
- arterial insufficiency
- dermatological infections
- pulmonary edema
**check for bluish skin, capillary refill, diminished/absent pulse
compression wrap
Do not verbally ask contraindications; check for signs of PVD:
- bluish skin
- capillary refill (check if nails stay blanched)
- diminished absent doralis pedis/post tib pulse
commercial cold pack, plastic ice bag, sluck bucket, ice massage
- raynaud’s
- buerger’s
- PVD
- history of frost bite to treatment area
- cold sensitivity
- severe C-V, respiratory problems
**explain CBAN occurs over 5 minutes
superficial heat (fluidotherapy, MHP, paraffin)
- presence of skin cancer in treatment area
- presence of lymphatic cancer
- severe CV or respiratory problems
- hemophilia
- long term steroid therapy
**Inspect treatment area for skin integrity:
skin infections or rashes
open wounds in the treatment area especially finger cuticles
over burn victim scar areas (ok with incisional scars)
recently applied liniments or sports rubs
moderate to severe peripheral vascular disease (distal 1/3rd of leg only) **
ultrasound
- presence of cancer in last 5 years
- pregnancy (if treating abdominal, pelvic or lumbar areas)
- myositis ossificans (if treating quads or brachialis/biceps)
- over sites of insulin injections (diabetic patient only)
- over unhealed fracture sites (thermal only)
- epiphysis of growth plates (ages 0-18 yrs)
- over spinal cord —post laminectomy
- cemented prostheses (some total hips)
____ Inspect treatment area for skin integrity
• active infection area
• open wounds or areas of hemorrhage
• over make-up areas — TMJ only
