no systemic effects; may be placed in anticipation of intercourse; fits over cervix; may leave in place for 24 hrs for repeated intercourse
diaphragms
foam may be used for an immediate emergency contraceptive
spermicidal gels, cream suppository, or foam
suppresses ovulation; take one pill/day; reduced risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer, benign breast disease, anemia, may improve acne
combination estrogen and progesterone oral contraception
reduces risk of pregnancy for one-time unprotected intercourse by suppressing ovulation
emergency contraceptives
take one pill at the same time every day; can be used during lactation
progestin only
one injection four times/year; can be used during lactation
depo-provera
place a new patch weekly for 3 weeks, then remove for 1 week
contraceptive patch
flexible hormone-filled ring inserted and left in the vagina for 3 weeks, then removed for 1 week; ring can be left for 28 days
vaginal ring
may be used w/ lactation; can be used by teens as well as women w/ medical problems/contraindications to other hormonal methods; highly effective; good for 1-10 yrs
IUC, copper material or hormone-releasing (levonorgestrel)
once in place, there is minimal discomfort; lasts for several yrs; can be used during lactation
