what is considered short-acitng reversible contraceptives (SARC)?
combined hormonla contraceptive (CHC)
- combination oral contraceptive pill
- transdermal patch
- vaginal contraceptive ring

what is considered long-acitng reversible contraceptives (LARC)?
injectable progrestin - DMPA
intrauterine contraception
- LNG-IUS
- Copper IUD (Copper iud not considered hormonal, but is long acting, No hormones)

LARC – includes IUD’s, injections and implants
Better for adherence and improper use and tend to be most effective option
what is pearl index
number of unintentional pregnancies per 100 women years of exposure
All new band products must have pearl index
Gives an idea of uninentional pregnancy
LOW = better, more effective
effectiveness of contraceptives
50% coninuation in 1 year for pill and injection
Don’t always go to another effectuve nethod after stopping
Based on typical use
IUDs (including copper) and implant are most effective (similar to sterilization)
Injectable less effective as IUD even though it’s LARC - people forget their injection adherence issues
Barrier, non-hormonal are less effective
Least effective are fertility based methods, spermicides
