Contraception And Women’s Rights Flashcards
What is the biblical teaching on contraception?
The Catholic Church is still totally opposed to any form of artificial contraception, from the teaching of Natural Moral Law.
Most Protestant churches today hold that there is a distinction between sex to strengthen a relationship and sex for procreation.
Describe secular views on contraception.
Most humanists have no ethical objections to birth control. They argue that if contraception results in “every child being a wanted child, and in better, healthier lives for women, it must be a good thing.”
Describe liberal feminism.
The first significant attempt to secure rights for women came in 1792 with the publication of ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ by Mary Wollenscroft. In this, she argues that women should have the same opportunities as men. She is believed to be the founder of feminism. Following this, the Women’s Social and Political Union was formed in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst. This became known as the Suffragette movement and their campaign throughout the 1900’s aimed to achieve the right for women to vote.
What is radical feminism?
Some feminists still believe that there is a need for dramatic social change. Radical feminism believes that society is patriarchal, or male dominated, and this has led to the systematic oppression of women. Radical feminism also believes that it is important for women to live as nature intended them to live and not as men have decided they should live.
What is social feminism?
It argues that true equality will not come about without major changes in society which in this context relates particularly to economic overhauls. Social feminists argue that there are fundamental inequalities built into the capitalist system because power and capital are distributed unevenly. Thus, it is not enough for women to work individually to ride through society but rather power needs to be redistributed throughout society.
