What are the positives of the COCP?
reversible, reliable, 12 hour window for taking, decreased meorrhagia, less risk of PID, protective factor for ovarian and endometrial cancer
What are the negatives of the COCP?
interactions eg with abx, no STD protection, less effective if taken later of if person had D+V, increased risk of breast and cervical cancer, VTE increased risk
How does the POP work?
Thicken cervical mucus and thins endometrium
No bleeding
What are oestrogenic side effects?
headache, nausea, breast tenderness, bloating
What are the positives of the POP?
no oestrogenic side effects, can be used if you smoke or are obese, have migraines or htn
What are the negatives of the POP?
3 hour window for taking, disrupts menstrual pattern, ovarian cysts risk
How effective are condoms typically?

What is the main advantage of condoms?
STI protection
What are the advantages of a diaphragm?
Can offer protection for STIs
What are the disadvantages of a diaphragm?
Need fitting by staff, needs spermicide which can be messy, can be dislodged
What does natural family planning involve?
Needs periods of abstinence
Can get predictor kit
Need 3-12 months of cycles to predict fertile time
When woman is breastfeeding and amenorrhagic she is unfertile until periods return- though not always fully effective
What is a depot provera?
Injectable s/c progesterone
what are the disadvantages of the depot?
May cause weight gain due to increased appetite
May be delay in return to fertility
Linked to low BMD
