What is an Abortifacient?
Something that displaces the fertilised egg eg; causes an abortion
eg; RU486 or Mifepristone
Marjory has come back to see you today. She has had her first baby 3 months. Will the fact that she is still breast feeding offer any contraceptive protection?
There are 3 important questions to ask Marjory before you can answer this question
- Has her menses returned?
- Has she also been supplementing/ taking longer breaks over the night without feeding
- Is her baby >6 months
At what point of the menstrual cycle can the IUD be inserted
at any point of the cycle, immediately postpartum (<48hrs) or after 4 weeks post partum
How long before IUS is effective?
7days
Wht are COCP not reccommended in breastfeeding women?
Because they can reduce the milk volume produced
In a women with a low BMi and infertility, what can we measure on day 21 to confirm ovulation and why do we do so?
Progesterone can be tested on day 21 of the menstrual cycle. Following ovulation LH and FSH grow the dominant follicle into the corpus luteum, which releases a surge of progesterone usually peaking on day 21

How early post partum could emergency contraception be required?
It is thought ovulation cannot occur prior to 28 days post partum
when should oestrogen containing contraception be stopped prior to major surgery or surgery that involves immobilisation of the lower limbs?
4 weeks prior, and a progesterone only contraception should be offered as an alternative
