What is contraception?
The prevention of conception by the use of birth control devices or methods
Two types of contraception
Non hormonal- barrier methods,
Intrauterine devices, fertility awareness surgical(vasectomy, sterilisation)
Hormonal - implant, pill, injection, intrauterine system
Intrauterine device - copper coil
Small T- shaped device thickens cervical mucus,can remain for l0 years, 99% effective
Fertility awareness method
Monitor cycle, takes 3-6 months to establish, can be 99% effective
Surgical intervention
Male sterillisation seal the tubes that carries sperm 99%.
Female sterilisation is wren the flapion tubes get blocked or sealed 99%
Oestrogen does what?
Suppresses ovulation.
Progestogen does what?
Prevents sperm reaching egg and prevents implantation
Combined oral contraceptive pill
There are two types of hormone and diff versions of the pill
① monophasic, this is when all pills have the same amount of drug 21 pills with 7 day break
② phasic, this when the pills have different amounts of drug depending on cycle
Who doesn’t use the COCP pill
Women that suffer with migraines they are offered the mini pill and DVT sufferers as it increases blood clots
COCP and cancer
Positive: reduces the risk of some cancer like ovarian cancer
Negative: increased risk of breast cancer
COCP side effects
Common: acne, weight gain, headaches mood change
Uncommon: acopecia, hypertension
Rare: VTE
Progesterone only pill (mini pill)
One pill everyday, 99% effective 92% with typical use
POP pill side effects
① common;.headache,. Nausea menstrual cycle changes
②uncommon:alopecia , ovarian cyst
Patch
Transdermal delivery oestrogen and progesterone, applied once every 3 weeks then a a patch free week . 99% effective if used correctlym
Vaginal ring
Inserted monthly vaginal delivery of oestrogen and progesterone, 99% effective of used correctly
Implant
Progestogen, inserted every 3 years 99% effective
Injection
Progestogen, injected every 13 weeks, 99% effective of
Drug interactions of pill
Lots of drug interractions: Rcgpppas important ones include alcohol smoking and St Jhons wort
Managed by:double dosing,. hormonal contraception. Or using progesterone only
