What is Cultural Destructiveness ?
When an individual pr policy tries to eliminate other cultures in all aspects of the school. They see the difference and stomp it out
An example of this could be supporting ICE to visit campus and screen students
What is Cultural Incapacity?
This is when an individual or policy trivializes and stereotypes other cultures, trying to make them seem wrong or inferior to the other cultures. They see the difference and make it wrong.
An example of this could be complaining, saying, “Asian students come to this country and succeed. Why wouldn’t the other students do so as well?”
What is Cultural Blindness?
This is when a person or policy fails to notice or acknowledge the cultures of others; it’s treating everyone the same without realizing some students have different needs. They see the difference and act like they don’t.
An example of this could be saying, “I don’t see color. I just see students.”
What is cultural precompetence?
-Counselors see the difference and at times, respond inappropriately. There is still room for growth.
- Educating with an increasing awareness of what you and the school don’t know about working in diverse settings. -At this level of development, you and the school can move in a positive, constructive direction, or you can falter, stop, and possibly regress
For example, saying, “I value all cultures. On the last day of finals, I have a day when students bring food representing their country.”
What is cultural competence?
Counselors see the difference and value it. It is aligning your values and behaviors, and the school’s policies and practices in order to include all cultures that may be different from yours. This enables healthy interactions.
-For example, if a student makes a derogatory remark, a counselor can use it as a teachable moment to remind students of the right thing to do.
You are you. I am me. But together, we are we.”
“I think it is interesting to look at another’s perspective through another lens.”
What is cultural proficiency?
Counselors see the difference and esteem it as an advocate for equity. This is when you hold the vision that you and your school are responsible for creating a socially just democracy. You engage in life-long learning and advocate to serve the educational needs of all cultural groups.
For example, you may be active in a committee that helps create culturally relevant lessons into the curriculum.
