How long should the offense be assessed
15 working days from the first day it was detected. Unless senate member extends the time frame.
Students should be given all evidence of offense by the stuff members; copies of plagiarism.
What is the evidence supposed to include?
- The assignment with the alleged plagiarism offenses outlined and documentary evidence of the original source material also marked
- Student must be informed of the time and place of the hearing and may be assisted by another student, or by the staff member.
- In instances that a student is alleged to have copied from another student. The other studentvis also required to come and attend the hearing, and to hear two probabilities. If it is found they students or group did not collude in syndicating or copying of the assignment they will not be penalized
What happens in the plagiarism hearing
Student must be given the opportunity to attend and have a representative. If a student is unable to attend the first time due to other reasons they shall be given a second chance to be able to attend again. Of which if they fail to come a decision can be made without their presence. The student’s representative has the right to question the committee, so does the committee too. Reasons of innocence, ignorance, and negligence can be given where applicable.
If the committee feels the case is so serious (Category C) it should refer to HOD to make arrangements for reassessments. If the committee finds that the student has committed plagiarism they shall be recalled. All of this shall be communicated to the student in order for the student can make a statement to the mitigation of penalty. If plagiarism is found to have occurred. The committee is entitled to ask student and representative questions. The committee should be guided by the policy general guidelines to try ensure that all cases are dealt with fairly. Since all cases are different they must look at the extensive of plagiarism, the academic level of study (1st,2nd or 3rd year), and check if student has received training of plagiarism.
If the student has been found guilty what to do next in Category B
The student can ask the review panel of chair of senate standing committee to review. Of which the HOD has to inform the chair of senate standing committee
When can the student ask for a review
When the penalty is excessive and unjust
They must write a letter to the senate within 5 days
There was material irregularity of departmental plagiarism committee
Who makes the final decision on plagiarism
The review panel (2 people chosen and one representative)
Everything is reported to them and they decide if the penalty was fit
Category c
Since this case is so serious the hearing should be conducted within 10 working days unless chair decides otherwise in cases of examinations,holiday vacations or other reasons.
SM can be removed in this case
Extensive category c
Student may be removed permanently from ufh or temporarily. If academic exclusion is recommended senate and concil shall be informed
Who assess Category c
Senate Plagiarism Tribunal
In case of removal of sm
Registrars Division must be informed. Must be indicated on students academic record
What happens in the case of honors, masters, thesis level
Plagiarism shall mot be treated like Category C unless if the alleged is a repeated offender. The dean of faculty shall be informed and must inform relevant people
