Continents, Oceans, Longitude, Latitude Flashcards
Prime Meridian
The prime meridian is the line of 0° longitude. It is the starting point for measuring distance both east and west around Earth.
Equator
The equator is a circle of latitude that divides Earth, into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Equator is an imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude, about 40,075 km in circumference, halfway between the North and South poles.
Tropics
The tropics are the regions of Earth surrounding the Equator. They are defined in latitude by the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere, and Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.
How many continents are there?
There are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia (listed from largest to smallest in size). Sometimes Europe and Asia are considered one continent called Eurasia.
How many oceans are there?
Historically, there are four named oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries now recognise the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Southern Ocean is the ‘newest’ named ocean.
Name all 7 continents
Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia
What ocean separates Europe and Africa from North and South America?
Atlantic Ocean
If you are on the eastern coast of Australia, you would be looking at what ocean?
Pacific Ocean
South Pole is also known as
Antarctica
North Pole is also known as
Arctic
Is North Pole a continent?
No. Unlike Antarctica which is considered to be a continent, the Arctic is not a continent.
A continent is any of the earth’s continuous expanse of land mass, and the Arctic is just an ice sheet floating on the Arctic Ocean.
Define ‘continent’
Continents are large and continuous masses of land which are separated by huge bodies of water (Oceans).
What are lines of longitude?
Lines of longitude, also called meridians, are imaginary lines that divide the Earth. They run north to south from pole to pole, but they measure the distance east or west.
What are lines of latitude?
Lines of latitude, also called parallels, are imaginary lines that divide the Earth. They run east to west, but measure your distance north or south. The equator is the most well known parallel. At 0 degrees latitude, it equally divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
Difference between physical and political map
While the physical map shows the natural features of a place such as mountains, waterbodies plains, etc. The political map displays territorial features such as cities, state, countries and their boundaries.
