1930-1940, women’s employment rate went up by 24% which rose from 10.5 to 13 million women working
Industrialisation and the dust bowl
In colonial America agriculture was the primary livelihood for 90% of the population. Most of America made its money through farming. Most towns in the Deep South were just shipping points for the export of agricultural products. The dust bowl were a series of hurricanes that destroyed farms meaning people had to migrate
The Wall Street crash
Started on the 29th October 1929. 16 million shares were sold overpriced on the stock market and it crashed because of the collapse of economy. Banks also closed
The Great Depression
Unemployment for men. 1.6 to 14 million men were unemployed over 4 years. 1929 to 1933. This happened because men went to war and women occupied their jobs
Life on the ranches
Harsh society selfish workers small food supply bad shelter dirty conditions and vulnerable to sicknesses and the workers were all migrant workers
