Patriarchal society
A patriarchal society is a society that is controlled by men. This was what life was like in Shakespearean times. Lord Capulet reflects this is in the play as he has absolute power over his wife and daughter. The man of the household would have power over all the wealth. Girls were expected to grow up to become wives and mothers. Their husbands would be chosen for them by their father.
Stereotypical ideas about Italians.
Shakespeare has set the play in Verona in Italy. At the time, Italy was regarded as a wealthy and romantic country, but also a place where they believed that murderous feuds and passionate love affairs took place. This is shown in the passionate way that the characters behave in the play.
