collection of stories called the Metamorphoses, by the Roman poet Ovid - woman is raped and has her tounge cut out and her and her sister are saved from murder by the gods by being turned into birds.The irony is that the woman who lost her voice (and her tongue) becomes the bird (nightingale) with one of the most beautiful voices in all of nature.
